Since 1977, promoting the life of the mind, past, present, and future, and charting a course for the public humanities in New York City and beyond

Since 1977, the New York Institute for the Humanities has remained an essential hub for the multigenerational and interdisciplinary meeting of intellect. In this time, NYIH has continued to grow as the conversational home to New York’s accomplished and burgeoning leaders in thought. Our 239 Fellows are the heart of our mission, as distinguished scholars, historians, artists, sociologists, and literary professionals whose work fills the pages of the newspapers, magazines, bookshelves, and websites that people around the world turn to every day.

Recently, under the guidance of a new Board of Directors, NYIH has reorganized as an independent 501c3 organization, forming a partnership with the New York Public Library. Fellows Forums as well as public conferences, discussion, readings, lectures, and podcasts serving NYIH’s mission are made possible in part through the generosity of our Fellows, the Patrons of NYIH, and other generous individuals and foundations.

Your gift will ensure that NYIH remains as an independent, enduring, and essential staple for the next generation of Fellows. By supporting NYIH’s critical programming and staffing needs, you will help nurture and expand the intellectual and practical horizons of our Fellows and of New York.
